Amazing tool for “second day” hair

The perfect tool for "second day" hair from {Stylishly Lived}

Having great “second day” hair is something that has eluded me for most of my life.  Naturally, I have curly hair but it is fairly fine and after sleeping on it, curly hair can end up looking  ”smooshed.”  Now that I routinely have Keratin straightening treatments, my hair is more consistent.  But again, because it is fine and slightly oily, my hair wasn’t cute “Kate Moss” dirty on the second day so much as “someone was out too late the night before and  clearly doesn’t own a hairbrush” brush on the second day of a wash.  And this was troubling because I really don’t like to shampoo too often – that is the key for me to avoiding split ends.  And since I am too lazy to get my hair cut more that two or three times a year, split ends are my enemy.

Really painting a beautiful picture for you here, aren’t I?

Let me tell you though – I have finally figured it out and my hair has been awesome as of late.  Awesome!  There are definitely multiple factors in play here: my amazing stylist, discovering the wonder of Keratin treatments, finding the right mix of treatments and getting my hair to a length that is easier to style.  For the longest time I always have had bobs (think Katie Holmes) and while I still think that is the shape that looks best on my face, with my particular texture of hair they can be impossible to manage.  And NO ONE looks polished with a “second day” bob.

My hair is finally half-way down my shoulder blades and although fine, there is a lot of it.  And this (after the jump) is what works for me to get amazing hair the day after a wash that verges on (dare I say) Kate Middleton gloriousness. (Maybe that was too far?  Probably…)  Keep reading to learn how…

How to shop a flea market

Booths at the Treasure Island Flea

Today I had my first flea-market adventure – and it was fantastic!

The flea market closest to me is the Treasure Island Flea and it is a far cry from bargain-bin, cassette-tape filled, turkey-leg flea markets I had been imagining.

The Treasure Island Flea has gorgeous hand-made furniture, amazing antiques and ~best of all~ Food Trucks!!!

Since it was my first trip to a flea market I decided to do a little research before hand and thought I would pass on the tips and trick for success to you!

Tutorial Tuesday: Layering Mascara

Let me start this by apologizing for the quality of the photos. Don’t feel like getting the real camera out and dealing with all that… so busted out the iPhone instead. Lazy is an excellent term for me tonight.

The best think I ever learned to do with my mascara was to layer it. I have two mascaras that I use:

First, one coat of my Dior Mascara (the BEST for volume and drama, two coats is too much for a “day look” for me)

Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara

Next, one coat of my CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Blasting Mascara. This combs out clumps really well and I wiggle the wand as I pull it through my lashes to comb even more!

And here is a quick before (with no other makeup on my face):

Without mascara (or anything else :) )

And with one quick coat of each:

With one quick coat of each mascara

Which mascaras to you layer?

Tips and Tricks: side braided bangs

I have a shorter bob with bangs. Which is great most days, and highly annoying other days. On those days when I can’t be bothered to deal with my bangs, I had been doing a “poof” to clip them back (you know, that look that was really in like four years ago, but that no one does anymore).

The reason I kept resorting to that style was that, try as I might, I just couldn’t master the cute side braid that is so much more stylish than a poof. I am a good braider, but it just never looked “right.”

Finally, after trial and error, I figured out the trick. Now, I am sure I am the last one to the party on this trick, but just incase there is some other frustrated soul out there, I thought I would share. The trick to making the braid look loose and effortless (which keeping some volume) is to only braid hair in on the outside of the braid (only add hair from next to your forehead, not on both sides).
