Nina Garcia’s The One Hundred: Driving shoes

Driving shoes are a perfect option for the weekend.  Like boat shoes or loafers, they are casual without looking sloppy.

The difference between driving shoes and moccasins or loafers are the rubber “nubbins” on the sole.  These give grip and traction – two things I actually need driving my little standard Volvo up and down the steep hills of San Francisco!

I pulled three options I love: a Must, a Should and a Lust.

Enjoy!

Nina Garcia’s The One Hundred: Diamond Studs

Whew – post #27 of this little series.  A quarter of the way there!

Diamond studs.  I love them.  I have shown you my go-to pair of “diamond” studs before.  I have owned one pair of real diamond studs in my life – but there were really more like diamond “speck” earrings; they were from a high school boyfriend and appropriately sized about 1/4 carat each.  But I lost one.  And that sort of made me not want to invest in another pair of “real” ones.  I wouldn’t turn them down of course if a pair happened to come my way (*ahem, hint hint), but I am too nervous to invest in a pair myself.

Not to fear!  There are a HUGE number of gorgeous “fake diamond” studs out there!  The best ones require a little investment (think the $50-$100 range).  Nina Garcia delves into the ins and outs of purchasing diamonds and what to look for in the book and the details are worth the read.  My three favorite cuts are cushion (unique and sparkly), emerald (classic and elegant) and a bezel-set round (a little more fun).

I rounded up a couple of classic options and a couple of fun ones that I love!

Nina Garcia’s The One Hundred: Denim Jacket

After yesterday’s brief detour, we are finally ready for the post I had intended as a return from the NGTOH (again, reference yesterday’s post) category.  Actually, I didn’t intend for a hiatus (indeed, I would love to finish this series up in 2013!).  Rather, I got stuck.

Denim jackets.  I love the way they look – on other people.  I personally find them difficult to wear because I am long waisted.  They always hit me as a very awkward spot about 1.5 inches above the waistband of my pants.  Not cute.  The ONLY way I can wear them is over a dress. And I do love that look.  So while Ms. Garcia has lots of other suggestions as to how to style a denim jacket, here is mine:

Dress: Cross-front Jersey Maxi from Old Navy (buy here)

Bag: Gap leather stripe tote (buy here) {clearly I am obsessed with this thing}

Nina Garcia’s The One Hundred: Cuff

I think I am going a little batty.  I swear I wrote this post a year ago.  I still have all the images I originally chose but cannot find the post ANYWHERE.  So, apparently I didn’t write it.  And I had to choose all new items because obviously not all my original picks are still available.

Now, I know what you are thinking… “Why did you wait a year to do another NGTOH post?” (if you aren’t up-to-date on my personal, internal acronyms please reference the title of the post).  There IS a reason, which will be addressed in the next post (stay tuned until tomorrow), which is, incidentally, all ready to go because I thought this one was done.  Sigh.

So.  A cuff.  Gotta love ‘em.  Who can ignore a big, gorgeous bracelet floating around on your wrist?  Statement jewelry to say the least,  but in a more subtle way than, say, a bib necklace.  They are ideal with an otherwise simple outfit, adding color, texture and sparkle without being too “too” – if you know what I mean.

Nina Garcia has a particular love affair with “Verdura Cuffs” – but even she thinks they are a bit spendy since they start at $12,500.  As always, she has amazing brand and styling recommendations, so check her book out, but here are a few I love:

Lust or Must: Color-block tote

Camel + coral is a favorite color combination of mine.  I have a great tote from C.Wonder in this combination but it isn’t available anymore.  I was trying to recommend it to a friend but was totally bummed when I couldn’t find it anymore!

Luckily I found two very similar options, though at vastly different prices.  Perfect with white jeans and a chambray top, if you can’t quite justify the Celine option, go for the one by Gap!

Certain days call for a rainbow

What a sad day.

So rather than write about how much I love Boston (a lot), how scary things like this are (very) and how amazing it is to see people come together and help each other out (extremely) – here is a little something to bring some brightness your way.

My go-to earring wardrobe

I am so lazy when it comes to jewelry.  I love accessories, I just don’t take the time to search out creative ways to add them to my outfits (working from home may play into this… a super cute jeweled bib necklace just doesn’t go with stretchy pants).

My husband likes jewelry and I realize how lucky I am to have a guy who likes it.  And I know he wishes I would wear it a bit more.  The one item I wear nearly every day is a pair of earrings (and my wedding ring, obviously).  Even though I have probably 50 pairs of really cute earrings, there are only about eight I consistently reach for.  In fact, I wear them so frequently they don’t even get put away, they live in a small jewelry dish on my vanity.

Here is my go-to earring wardrobe:

Pantone 2013 Color of the Year: Emerald

I love when Pantone announces their color of the year!  Makes me start searching for all sorts of things I wouldn’t normally search for in an unusual color.  Last year, not so much (because one of my wedding colors was Tangerine… way ahead of you Pantone!), but this year – totally inspired!  Green is just not a color I usually choose!  More of a blue-girl myself.  And Emerald… well, I thought that was more reserved for Dorothy and the Wizard (I am sure I am the 74,823,000 to make THAT joke).  ”Give me Forest green any day, but Emerald – meh” I thought.  I think I have only ever really owned one piece of Emerald attire: this Boston Red Sox hat:

I know, how very thug-life with the sticker and flat brim and all.

I know, how very thug-life with the sticker and flat brim and all.  I wrap those brims around soda-cans the minute I get them home!

I was SO wrong!  Emerald is gorgeous!  I am slowly becoming obsessed!  And to share this new obsession with you, here are a few of my most recently “Emerald-y” favorites:

What I’m wearing for a Winery Wedding this weekend

Heading to a wedding this weekend and I am super excited!

It is in Sonoma at a gorgeous winery and I haven’t been to a wedding yet this year, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity for a new outfit!

I chose this dress from Nordstrom (get it here) and I love it!  Very comfy, light-weight material (perfect for hot summer months) and a gorgeous blue.

Next came the shoes.  Being at a winery, wedges are a must.  I don’t want heels poking through the grass and making me trip!  And I have been in the market for a new pair of nude heels (the most useful option, don’t you think?  Goes with everything!).  But I also didn’t want to hugely invest in a pair because wearing them outdoors can ruin them.  So, I chose this Nine West pair through Piperlime.com (just noticed they are on sale, bummer they weren’t earlier!).

And finally, as I was poking around Piperlime, I saw some adorable accessories on sale!  And they are still available!  I love blue and orange paired together (my wedding colors – yay!) so I naturally needed a pair of orange studs for this dress!  And who doesn’t love a huge cocktail ring!  I put links to both below the photo:

What are you wearing to weddings this summer?
